Given the fact that we have those Valentine’s Day gurus out there (like us), we couldn’t help but notice all the festive local items to help celebrate. From the fashions to the sweets and the smells to the wine, Nashville once again proves that there is so much to love!
The week starts with a trip to the Dublin Food Co-Op in Kilmainham in Dublin which has been selling dry food staples without packaging for several years. Sunday morning is quiet enough to navigate a shopping experience where you pull a lever on a dispenser and fill a bag instead of grabbing a clearly priced package and tossing it in the basket.
But in a market flooded with candles of all shapes, sizes, and scents, it’s no longer a one-size-fits-all game. This Brooklyn-based company specializes in Greek olives harvested in Laconia, in southern Greece, where the co-founders’ father grew up. The oil’s low-key, but stylish, label has landed it on at least one list of the “prettiest olive oils you’ll want on display.” Unfortunately, the oil inside didn’t impress our panel: All five judges thought this particular product tasted “rancid,” with Il Buco’s Rubin comparing it to “wet leaves” and “dirty water.” Platt, meanwhile, described that taste as “rotten bananas with some paraffin oil.”
The wine, from sandy, rocky soils, expressed delicate, yet complex flavors with a minerality that fit with both the hearty soup and raw vegetables.
